Americans have always been ambivalent (有矛盾心理的) in their attitudes toward education. On the one hand public education was seen as necessary. On the other hand, America was always a country that offered financial (金融的) opportunities for which education was not needed: on the road from the poor to the rich, schooling—beyond the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic —was an unnecessary detour (弯路).
Even today, it is still possible for people to achieve financial success without much education, but the number of situations in which this is becoming smaller. In today’s more complex (复杂的) world, the opportunities for financial success have much to do with the need for education, especially higher education.
Our society is rapidly becoming one whose chief product is information, and dealing with this information requires more and more specialized (专门的) education. In other words, we grow up learning more and more about fewer and fewer subjects.
In the future, this is likely to continue. Tomorrow’s world will be even more complex than today’s world, and, to manage this complexity, even more specialized education will be needed.
    61. The topic of essay is ____.
    A. education B. Americans’ attitudes C. American education D. higher education
    62. The best title for this selection is ____.
    A. The Future of the American Educational System B. The History of American Education
    C. Attitudes toward American Education D. The Need for Specialized Education
    63. Today, financial success has much to do with the need for ____.
    A. higher education B. public education C. good citizens D. learning the basics
    64. Which of the following statements is not true?
    A. Americans have different attitudes toward education.

There are many things we can do in our daily life to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas sent out. Probably the most important is to share what you have learned with your family and friends. Use the family car less. Walk or cycle whenever possible. Take a bus. Try ride sharing. Use less energy in the house by turning down the heat when you are away or sleeping and turning off lights and electrical equipment you aren’t using.
If your family needs a car, make sure to buy a fuel-efficient one. An average car sends out nearly 60 tons of carbon dioxide during its lifetime, compared to between 22 and 30 tons from a fuel-efficient car.
Encourage your family to use the car more efficiently (有效地): for example, check the air in the tires. Under in flatted tires can increase fuel use by 8%. Turn the car off instead of letting it run when it is stopped. Idling uses more gas and sets free carbon dioxide into the air,
Reuse, recycle and compost (把……合成肥料 ) your waste. It takes much less energy to reuse or recycle a product than to make a new one. Correctly composting your food and yard waste removes the methane (沼气) that they would cause at the landfill site. Buying less is al- ways the best.
Plant trees. Trees take in carbon dioxide, reduce pollution, provide shade, and look great.
    65. Which of the following does the writer suggest that we should not do?
    A. Share cars with other people if possible.
    B. Make sure our car tires are well inflated.
    C. Compost our home waste at the landfill site.
    D. Buy less products even if we can afford.
    66. A fuel-efficient car gives off__ tons of carbon dioxide during its lifetime less than an average
    A. 22-30 B. 30-38 C. 60 D. 8-30
    67. The purpose of this text is to call on people
    A. to control greenhouse gas B. to make full use of energy
    C. to plant more trees D. to buy fuel-efficient cars

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Interact today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react (反应 ) to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is hap- pening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything—politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts

The following conversation is between Susan Russell-Robinson from the US Geological (地质学的)Survey and Barbara Reynolds from USA Today .
Q: Why, after 600 years of no activity , did Mount Pinatubo in Philippines erupt(喷发)in 1991 ?
A: Volcanoes (火山) each have their own eruption styles . This volcano probably has a rule which makes it erupt in the order of every 500 to 1000 years, but a volcano in Hawaii seems to erupt every year, and some of the Alaskan volcanoes might erupt every 10 or 20 years.
    Q: So nothing caused it?
A: There’s nothing out of the ordinary. If you were to take an ordinary calendar year, 50 to 75 or 80 volcanoes erupt around the world every year. There are 20 to 30 volcanoes every month that show signs of unrest. That might be a full-blown eruption or a whole host of activities like that.
Q: What is “the ring of fire”?
A: If you look at where active volcanoes are placed around the world, there are somewhere between 500 and 600 of them. There is what appears to be almost a necklace that goes around the Pacific Ocean. It makes a ring where 60% of the world’s volcanoes lie.
    Q: Why so many there?
A: That’s based on a theory that the oceans and the continents are like separate pieces. When they move, one might ride up over the other one. In this case , the Pacific Ocean goes under the continents and when that happens it seems to produce magma (熔岩)at depth and then you have volcanoes in the same ring .
    72. What kind of writing do you think this passage is?
    A. A text taken from a geography book.
    B. An interview published in the press.
    C. A conversation carried out in a film
    D. An oral test recorded as an example.
    73. Which of the following statements can correctly explain why we have so many volcanoes
    around the Pacific Ocean?
    A. The movement of the surface of the earth makes it possible.
    B. The Pacific Ocean produces magma and presses it everywhere.
    C. The oceans and the continents are separated from each other.
    D. The earth’s surface around the Pacific is thinner than any other part.
    74. Barbara Reynolds’ main purpose here is .
    A. to show how dangerous volcanoes are to the world
    B. to learn what signs a volcano gives us before its eruption
    C. to warn the world of the existence of “the ring of fire”
    D. to introduce some general idea of volcanoes to the public
    75. Which of the following can be considered as the best conclusion of the conversation?
    A. There are so many volcanoes in the world and we are always in danger.
    B. Volcanoes have erupted more frequently than ever before.
    C. Volcanoes are waiting to be better known.
    D. Something must be done to protect the people near the ring of fire.

A recent study shows that nearly 50 percent of the school kids in Beijing do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy all day and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of tests.
Some students who study late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on the way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few school girls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast.
In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy. For a creative mind and better judgment, school kids should start their days with a regular breakfast.

M: Our teacher looks as if he is worried.
    W: Yes, certainly he is.
M: Do you know what he is worried about?
W: Perhaps he is worried about his health.
M: You are right, I think. He is a heavy smoker.
W: I agree. He is the biggest chimney I know.
M: If he wants to keep fit and live longer he has got to cut down on smoking.
W: And maybe he should take some medicine to help.
M: I think we’ve got to persuade him to stop. He will kill himself going like that.
    W: Sure.

W: Good morning, Henry. This is Pales speaking.
    M: Henry speaking.
W: Did you hear the weather forecast this morning, Henry?
M: No, I didn’t. But I can tell you without any forecast that the weather is nasty. Look, how
overcast the sky is, and there’s the feeling of rain in the air.
W: Yea, autumn is here with the drizzle and slush.
M: Rain or shine, I must go out. I have some shopping to do.
W: They say we’ll have a mild winter.
M: It was horribly cold last winter.
W: But the sunny mornings with the icicles hanging from the roofs, weren’t they pleasure?
M: Yes, they were, but I had no time to go for walks in the morning. Besides, the streets were
often terribly slippery and it made walking rather unpleasant…

M: Can you turn it on for me?
W: OK, Just wait a while.
M: Well, if something does become defective, where can I go for service and parts?
W: You can bring it here and we’ll send it to the manufacturer.
M: Do you have an installment plan available for your customers?
W: Yes, you can apply for it by just signing some forms.
M: And what are your terms?
W: Quite simple. You make a down payment of five thousand dollars, and then, within a year, one
thousand for each and every month.
    Text 10
I was born 50 years after slavery, in 1913. I was encouraged to read. My mother, who was a teacher, taught me when I was a very young child.
The first school I attended was a small building that went from first to sixth grade. There was one teacher for all of the students. There could be anywhere from 50 to 60 students of all different ages. From 5 or 6 years old to in their teens. We went to school five months out of the year. The rest of the time young people would be available to work on the farm. THE parents had to buy whatever the student used. Often, if your family couldn’t it, you had no access to books, pencils, whatever. However, often the children would share. I liked to read all sorts of stories, like fairy tales—Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose. I read very often.

Last Friday a storm tore through two villages in South Africa destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or torn roofs. One person was killed, several were badly injured and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received small injuries. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer, Mr. Smith, said the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. “I was in the kitchen with my wife and children,” he said, “when we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us”. We managed to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but frightened.” Soldiers helped to bring people out and the government provided food, clothes and houses.

I’m Mike. It is Sunday today. I called Tom in the morning, but nobody answered the phone. I called Bob. He was at home. He told me, since the sun was shining and the birds were singing, his family was very happy. They were all at home in the yard. His father was planting flowers. His mother was drinking and reading a book. Mary and Bill are playing with their toy. In the evening Tom called me and told me, since it was a beautiful day, his family went to the park. They had a good time.
My family was very happy today. My father was reading the newspapers and my mother was playing with my nephew. I was watching TV all day.
